Palermo

Palermo is the capital of Sicily, spread out at the foot of Mount San Pelegrino, and the largest port on the northwest coast. The city is often called an open-air museum that preserves the treasures of the Roman and Greek empires, as well as the heritage of the original Normans and Arabs.

Palermo’s seething energy manifests itself in everything – an endless stream of cars, brilliant fashionable hotels and restaurants, narrow streets, where residents from neighboring houses can easily say hello walking out onto the balcony, old fountains, a heap of architectural forms from different eras, in sirens of carabinieri cars chasing the mafia. Tourists either forever fall in love with this southern chaos with the smell of salty sea and oranges, or never come back here again.

Palermo is a city of palaces, churches and monasteries. What sins the locals wanted to repent by building so many houses of God, they know only.

Climate

The island is dominated by a Mediterranean climate. Due to its special geographical location, topography and currents, good summer weather lasts until December. Winter is much warmer than on the continent. February is considered the coldest month. The thermometer column does not rise above 15C. In April, hot and humid summers begin again, which reaches its peak in August with temperature records at 40C.

The beach season officially begins in May and ends at the end of October. Water gradually warms up from 20С to 25С.

What to see

Inspection of Palermo should begin with its historical part. It consists of 4 blocks: Seralcadio, Calsa, Albergeria and La Lodge. They are connected by 3 main streets of Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Via Macueda and Via Roma. The latter is blocked on weekends and holidays. It turns into a huge food market and a pedestrian boulevard.

On Freedom Square stands the Royal Norman Palace. This is the main attraction of the city, as well as the former residence of the vice-kings of Sicily. Since 1947, the island’s parliament has been sitting in it. Part of the palace is a museum, and Roger Hall with genuine examples of Norman art is considered the most notable hall.

The palaces of Abatelis, Chiaramonte, Schiafant, as well as the Royal Palace deserve attention.

The Gothic-style Cathedral of St. Rosalia, built in 1185, is the burial place of the relics of the martyr. Here lie the emperors who ruled Sicily.

Capuchin catacombs are a highly visited place. About 8,000 people found peace in this underground cemetery. Some of the remains are stored in open form.

The Admiral’s Church is notable for its artifacts. It contains the rarest mosaics, skillfully made by masters from Constantinople.

Pretoria Square is often called Shame Square. This is due to the fountain and the statues adorning it. They are so detailed that all anatomical details are visible. Once the locals were so angry that they broke off the heads of the statues. Vandals were punished, the masterpiece was restored. To this day, the building drives the shy citizens and tourists into the paint.

Italian opera recognized as the best in the world. You can enjoy the music and the voices of the singers at the Massimo Grand Opera House. It is the 3rd largest in Europe after Vienna and Paris. By the way, the staircase of the theater starred in the famous film “The Godfather”, becoming a tragic backdrop for the final outcome.

Hiking around the city stimulates the appetite. Enjoy local specialties in the La Loggia area. Here, in almost every home there is a pizzeria, trattoria or a family restaurant serving exclusive dishes prepared according to old family recipes.

Beaches

The most popular among the citizens are the comfortable sandy beaches of Terrazini and Mondello. A little further is Montreal. Because of the water park there is always crowded and noisy. Cefalu is a picturesque place for romantics.
