The best train routes for tourists

Any type of transport that mankind invented sooner or later becomes the property of travelers and tourists. Recently, tours to uncharted corners of our planet have become popular.

It offers tourists bus tours to different cities and countries, tours by helicopter and small airplanes. But the most reliable and time-tested type of movement over long distances is railway transport. Nowadays, it has been unjustly underestimated by tourists. But in vain, after all, in many countries of the world, and in Russia as well, there are many magnificent railway routes that run through the most beautiful corners of our planet.

Rail travel is most suitable for those who are used to traveling on their own. Among the unique railways is the Bergen Railway, which most recently celebrated its centenary. This road runs from east to west of Norway and connects the two largest cities of the country – Oslo and Bergen. The length of the road is 470 kilometers, which the train overcomes in seven hours, making about twenty stops on its way. It is noteworthy that this route cannot be repeated by car, as there are no highways between some high-altitude stations to this day.

Bergen Railway

Alpine nature, green valleys, harsh glaciers and 200 tunnels that can be seen from the train windows are a good reason to make such a trip.

Among the popular railway routes are the Rhetian Railway – a narrow gauge railway that runs in two states – Italy and Switzerland. The railway route runs through the picturesque places of the Alps, and passengers are transported by the Bernina Express train. The road that runs from the city of Cura (Switzerland) to Tirano (Italy) is listed by UNESCO as a miracle of engineering.

Rhetian Railway

Due to the gigantic elevation difference, the railway track in the section from Tuzis to Tirano constantly winds, like a snake, not only in open areas, but also in zigzag tunnels, as well as curved bridges, such as the Landwasser viaduct. This railway route is also notable for the fact that on the Bernina Pass in front of the tourists it offers a magnificent view of the mountain of the same name, which is the highest peak of the Eastern Alps, whose height is 4049 meters above sea level. And when the train approaches the city of Tirano, then palm trees stand before the gaze of travelers, and a warm breeze blows in the train windows. From mid-May to October, Bernina Express leaves from Kura and Davos to Tirano four times a day and twice from St. Moritz. The rest of the time, the train runs only twice a day from St. Moritz and Kura.

In Russia, the oldest narrow-gauge railway, which still operates passenger traffic today, is the Kudemskaya narrow gauge railway, which can attract tourists’ attention. The route of this railway is one of the oldest and most beautiful.

Kudemskaya narrow gauge railway

The Kudemskaya narrow gauge railway route runs through the territory of the Arkhangelsk region, starting from Severodvinsk to White Lake. This narrow gauge railway once belonged to the timber industry enterprise and stretched for a hundred kilometers through the dense Karelian forests. Today, the forest is not transported along this road. The train includes a small locomotive, two covered wagons with stove stoves and one or two “laths”, which are open wooden platforms with two long benches. If the weather is good outside, then it is best to travel in the “crates” – they have a better view and fresh air. In a narrow gauge train moves at a speed of 30 km / h. The journey from Severodvinsk to White Lake takes an hour and a half. During this time, you can see amazing landscapes of the local region. An interesting fact is that the Kudemskaya narrow gauge railway has almost no alienation strip. The trees growing around come so close to the train that only a measured clatter of wheels reminds you that you are taking a train and not walking along a forest path.

Recently, more attention has been paid to railway tourism. So, for example, trains began to go from Moscow to Beijing and Paris. And as part of the route to Beijing, an excursion along the Circum-Baikal Railway is provided, which will be of interest to many travelers.
