The best resorts of Cambodia

Today, Cambodia is popular among tourists who want to add a little spicy exotic to a chic vacation in Southeast Asia. The beaches in the Khmer kingdom are not inferior in beauty to Vietnamese and Thai, but the infrastructure is poorly developed. The indecently low prices for food, drinks and accommodation compensate for all the inconvenience. Here are the best resorts worth visiting.

Siem Reap

The city is located in the north of the country. People come here to enjoy the beauty of the temple complex of Angkor Wat. Siem Reap was founded in 802 and repeatedly changed its name. In the 16th century, he received a name that has survived to this day, which in translation from Khmer means “Siam defeated.”

Until the beginning of the 19th century, the city was not known outside of Cambodia, but everything changed after the discovery of Angkor by French explorers. Since then, Siem Reap, like a magnet, has attracted adventurers and antiquities. Numerous hotels, restaurants and cafes have been built for them. Nearby is the international airport, receiving flights from around the world.

Sihanoukville

The only seaside resort with a relatively developed infrastructure appeared in the early 1950s and is developing steadily. The city received its name in honor of King Sihanouk, who ordered the creation of a settlement on the coast.

Sihanoukville is located 230 km from Phnom Penh and is washed by the warm waters of the South China Sea. The place attracts with beautiful and clean beaches. There are no noisy discos and chic restaurants, so the town is more suitable for lovers of a calm and contemplative holiday. The main attractions are sunbathing, snorkeling, diving and trips to neighboring islands.

Udong

This is the ancient capital of Cambodia, located in the province of Kampong Spa, about 40 km from Phnom Penh. It attracts people interested in Buddhism. Despite the fact that many shrines were destroyed in the 1970s, worthy architectural masterpieces have been preserved in the city. The main attraction is the hill of Phnom Udong, on which several temples and a stupa 43 m high were erected. It contains the remains of Buddha. To get to the top, you need to overcome 509 steps. Perseverance will be rewarded: a picturesque view of Udong and adjacent rice fields opens from the observation deck.

Phnom penh

The capital of the kingdom and the largest city is located in the central part of the country, about 150 km from the Gulf of Thailand. The population of the city is a little more than 2 million people. This is a kind of transit point for tourists traveling to the coast of Cambodia. Travelers do not miss the opportunity to relax after a tiring flight and to explore the main city of the country, which contains interesting Buddhist monuments.

You should definitely visit the Silver Pagoda, the floor of which is lined with silver plates. Phnom Temple rushed into the sky at 27 m, so this architectural masterpiece can be seen from afar. It is surrounded by a beautiful park with monkeys. Not all primates are friendly with respect to humans and can leave the onlooker without a phone or wallet.

Wat Ounalom, the main temple of the country, is located on the waterfront. Its name translates to “eyebrow”. It is believed that in one of the stupas, the hair from the eyebrow of Buddha is immured. Whether this is so is not known for certain. The temple was built in 1443, during the Khmer Rouge, it was destroyed, but was rebuilt.

In order not to fall into the crowd of tourists, it is better to visit Ounalom in the morning, immediately after opening, and one hour before closing. Free admission.

Battambang

The tourist city is almost unknown to Russian tourists, but among the foreign it enjoys well-deserved popularity due to ancient temples and ruins. Battambang is located 290 km northwest of Phnom Penh and 170 km from Siem Reap, is the capital of the province of the same name.

The city was founded in the 9th century and is the 2nd in the country in terms of population (almost 220,000 people).

The resort is saturated with the spirit of the French colonial era. The old quarter with European-style mansions is located near the Sangker River. There are also restaurants, cafes and shops for tourists. Most iconic attractions are located outside the city.

Among them, the Provincial Museum, which introduces Khmer culture, you can also sign up for a culinary master class here.

Bamboo train – an attraction, offering a ride on a wagon on rails at a speed of 25 km / h.

Phnom Sampo Temple stands on top of a mountain; you have to climb a steep path. Inside the building are sculptures. Near the temple are sacred caves with burials of ancient people.

Wat Banan and Wat Ek Phnom are temple complexes built during the heyday of the Khmer empire. Buildings of the 11th century are well preserved.

Kampot

A small town in the central part of Cambodia, lying on the banks of Kampong Bay. The population is about – 40 000 people
